I built Birdman, forged and welded stainless steel, 7’” x 26” x 16”, 2018-2019, for a client who wanted something different. He was considering one of my realistic birds like Owl or Osprey, but wanted me to challenge myself to think about something outside the box. Birdman evolved from that exploration. He is middle aged, his wings are not big enough for his weight, but through determination, he is lifting off anyway. The client was in no rush, and thought I should show it for a season. At the end of the summer, I crated it and was ready to go, when I got a call from the client’s sister saying that he passed away suddenly. I am looking for a new home for Birdman. He was months of labor.
