Osprey

Forged and welded stainless steel, 54” wingspan, 2012

Barney Zeitz - Metal sculpture Osprey

I built my first Osprey in 2012 from forged and welded stainless steel. This was months of directly welding rods to build armature, then forged plates to cover the armature. It has a 54” wingspan. I was then commissioned to do an outdoor shower with the water coming out of the mouth of the fish in 2014. A third Osprey was commissioned with a large fish being held by both sets of talons in 2017. Each Osprey was hand built, each different from the others. This is a major difference from casting bronze where exact replicas are cast in a mold.

Third Osprey at Makonikey Head 2017

I started making this smaller Osprey to use in various locations and designed in such a way to simplify the form into two pieces welded together to give the illusion of the more complex sculpture. I could offer this 24” x 12” x 14” version for a fraction of the price of the large one. I have sold many of these, used in a variety of ways seen here. A new corner mount has recently been added to the repertoire.

On my outdoor shower. Excuse the hand.

Prices vary depending on the mount, the length of the rod, and how it is attached.
